Why I am involved

As a woman whose livelihood depends on my health, I make sure to stay on top of my regular doctor appointments. I don't know the reasons, but I think men are less vigilant about this kind of thing, especially when it comes to prevention and early detection issues. I am involved with Athletes for a Cure because I know that every man in my life has a 1 in 6 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. This is my way of becoming part of the solution to a cancer that will affect 218,000 families this year alone. Please join me as an athlete for a cure!

Bio

Born on September 6, 1969 in Fairfield, New South Wales, Michellie Jones is a short and long course triathlete from Australia. Her most prominent success is the 2006 Ironman World Champion title.

Jones became the first Australian women to win a World Ironman Championship with her victory in the 2006 Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. Jones' victory makes her the second Australian in history to win this prestigious even – behind the 1994 Men's World Champion, Greg Welch. Interestingly, both Jones and Welch hail from "The Sutherland Shire" in Sydney's South as does the 2006 men’s 2nd place finisher, Chris McCormack.

Jones took second place in the 2005 Ironman Triathlon, losing the lead during the run to Natascha Badmann. This was only the second time that she competed in an iron distance triathlon. Jones is the winner of the 2006 Ironman Arizona Triathlon, finishing with a time of 9:12:53.

Jones competed at the first triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where she won the silver medal with a total time of 2:00:42.55, only two seconds behind leader Brigitte McMahon. Her split times were 19:43.88 for the swim, 1:05:32.90 for the cycling and 0:35:25.77 for the run. She also won the test event in 2003 for the course used in the 2004 Summer Olympics, though she did not compete in that Olympiad.

Her recent International Triathlon Union rankings include 4th (2001), 4th (2002) and 3rd (2003).
